Amsterdam Oud-Zuid, which translates to Old South, is a beautiful and up market neighbourhood in Amsterdam. It is well known for its cultural attractions, green open spaces and stunning architecture. As its name suggests, Amsterdam Oud-Zuid is located in the south of the city centre, just outside the Canal belt. The Oud-Zuid neighbourhood is distinguished by its large houses and stately mansions on beautiful tree lined streets and cosmopolitan atmosphere. It is the most desirable area in Amsterdam to live.

Amsterdam Oud-Zuid Neighbourhood History

The Amsterdam Oud-Zuid neighbourhood dates back to the late 19th century to early 20th century. During this period, the area underwent fast urban expansion. It was at this point that many of the stunning mansions and eye-catching tree lined roads were built. It was a development for the wealthy and prosperous of Amsterdam’s elite at that time. Today the neighbourhood continues to showcase the heritage and charm from its inception through the preservation of the stunning architecture. The area also continues to be the chosen residence of Amsterdam’s wealthiest residents.

Museum Quarter in Oud-Zuid

Within the Oud-Zuid neighbourhood is the Museum Quarter. The Museum Quarter is known worldwide for being the cultural heart of the city. Within the Museum Quarter you will find many cultural museums, most notably The Rijksmuseum, The Stedelijk Museum and the Van Gogh Museum. These museums house a wealth of art and cultural artefacts dating back hundreds of years. This includes masterpieces from Rembrandt like the Night Watch painting by Rembrandt, along with Sunflowers and a self portrait by Vincent Van Gogh. There is also the Concertgebouw offering world class orchestral music.

Vondelpark

Vondelpark is one of the largest and most enjoyed green spaces in Amsterdam. It is a main thoroughfare for residents travelling into the city, but also a place for relaxation, exercise and contemplation. Spanning around 120 acres in size, the Vondelpark is a mix of a large bike path, winding walking paths, lush green area, woodland and ponds. Within the park there are also many cafes, an open air theatre and many children’s play areas. There is an abundance of nature in the park, most notably the wide variety of birds such as storks, herons and parakeets.

Fashion and Shopping

P.C. Hooftstraat shopping

The Amsterdam Oud-Zuid neighbourhood is well known for its luxury shopping. The upmarket boutiques and famous luxury brands are found throughout the neighbourhood, but most notably on P.C. Hooftstraat. The P.C. Hooftstraat is the most well known of the neighbourhood’s shopping area and is one of the most expensive shopping streets in the Netherlands. You will find Chanel, Prada, Cartier and more on this street. The other well known shopping street in Oud-Zuid is Cornelis Schuytstraat, a premier shopping destination with designer boutiques and desirable cafes. 

Restaurants and Cafes

There are many restaurants and cafes in the Amsterdam Oud-Zuid neighbourhood. From trendy, boutique cafes offering specialty coffee such as Coffee District to fine dining at the Oud Zuid restaurant, there is something for everyone. The range of choices for food and restaurant types is diverse, you can enjoy Italian, French pastries or sit down at a Brasserie like The George on Wilemsparkweg. There is something to satisfy every taste and budget.
